Student Spotlights
Angel Rodriguez Gonzales
Angel Rodriguez Gonzales has grown from a young child entering Maryvale Preparatory in 2012 to becoming a leader on campus as a proud member of the academy’s inaugural senior class of 2022. Although higher education graduation rates are low in his neighborhood, Angel plans to attend college and study criminal justice or psychology.
Maryvale Preparatory’ s inaugural senior class of 2022 has been awarded more than half a million dollars in scholarships and most of the 27 seniors will be the first in their family to attend college.
According to Angel, Maryvale Prep has offered an amazing experience to him and his fellow classmates. He attributes his personal development to the school’s unique culture which connects them together and prepares them for the future.
Angel is grateful for the love, patience, and support shown to him over the years from the Great Hearts teachers who pour out their hearts to their students both inside and outside of the classroom.
What is your favorite class and why?
My favorite class would be Humane Letters. It helps me understand literature and learn how to write my own essays. The Socratic method helps me understand the point of view of others and develop critical thinking to ask my own questions.
What have you learned as a scholar-athlete?
I am proud to be a Matador and have played tackle football, basketball and soccer. Football has made me stronger not only physically but also mentally. Athletics have taught me that things aren’t just handed to you and that you have to work hard to earn success. We were excited to make it to the tackle football championship game in 2021 with support from the Arizona Cardinals!
